Craft Beer Monday Review: Breckenridge Avalanche Amber Ale
A friend of mine went to school in Colorado and was able to enjoy all they had to offer, and Breckenridge was one of those who occasionally popped up with a good one. I think with the other breweries out there (Fort Collins, New Belgium, the big beast) it must be tough to sell your beer, unless you own taverns, I guess. And like those tavern chain style beers, I feel this one fits right in. It may be just me but it seems when a beer tavern sells its food first, it concentrates on it and then later the beer, as opposed to the other way way around. For example, a small brewery and pizzeria in the Wisconsin Dells seems to brew beer that complements the food well, without going too crazy on the beer recipes (all between 4.0% and 5.5%).
This one was really not all that bad, considering it was practically a session beer. It had the right color, amber and cloudy, but it a lot of carbonation. It was slightly sweet with little hop presence but it had an unusual slightly unpleasant flavor right at the end, kind of a metallic taste, like when I was drinking out of a glass I had kept frosted in the freezer a little too long. I had also associated that with beers that try a little too hard to bring out flavors that the higher gravity naturally produces.
But it wasn't a completely terrible beer, and I would taste it again.Maybe this time with food.
CBC Rating: 3.
Poured into an Imperial Pint glass from the bottle. Included in a six pack of create your own given to me for Christmas this year. As far as the alcohol content, I am not sure where to look. Beer Advocate lists it at 5.41% (but with a different label) as does the Breckenridge website, but the bottle itself says 4.4%. Maybe this is a regional thing.
