I know that I have reviewed this when I took the tour of the brewery in Warrenville but after having more of it on Christmas Eve and again on New Years, I have to re-mention how much I like it now and have always liked it.
There is so much to this beer and to Two Brothers that sets them apart from other brewers, and I think one specific way is just looking at how unique it is. Others have darks and ambers as their flagship but really to have a French Country Ale is a bold way to go and I am glad they do.
It is formally know as a Biere de Garde, and the good ones should be deep copper, medium in body, characterized by toasted malts and sweetness from fruits or caramel malts, mildly hoppy. Flavor of alcohol is also evident. I think this definition describes it very well.
I have tasted it at a few restaurants on tap, brought growlers from the tap house to parties, tasted the oak aged variety too, and it is all so good.
I think the hop presence that you taste after the caramel sweetness plus its overall smoothness from top to bottom is the key for me. It is one that I try to keep in my fridge at all times, but it is very tough not to drink them all.
CBC Rating 6. First ever.
Poured from bottle into this pilsner glass. Bought a 12 pack (now available this way) from Binny's.
ABV: 5.9%.
